We are going to Starvation Canyon which is in Spanish Fork Canyon. It was featured in the Rock and Gem magazine about 18 months ago. We will be looking for Turitella Shells and Clams in metrix and loose clams. You can camp over on Friday the 13th. Anywhere up Starvation
canyon along the creek. We will be rock hounding between a half a mile and one
mile off of highway 6. It is an excellent gravel road, which any vehicle can
navigate. There are places for motor homes and trailer with ATV's to park. But
it is first come first serve. For those that want to follow or carpool, we will be
meeting on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. at the park immediately after the
Spanish Fork highway 6 exit, right off of I 15. For those that want to go on their
own, Starvation Canyon is about 40 minutes up on the right hand side at a well
marked sign. (Immediately past Skyline Drive.) We will be rock hounding for a couple of hours.
Then having a potluck barbecue lunch. We will have a generator and saws to cut
or slab the kid's finds. At 1:30 for those that want to leave, we will be going
to look for oolitic limestone geodes, and birdseye limestone. Which was
featured in a mid 1990's Rock and Gem magazine. For those that are only coming to the second site.
The directions are to go up Spanish Fork Canyon to Highway 89. Turn right or
south on highway 89, and travel 6 miles to a mailbox on the left hand side of
the road, and a parking area by a gate. We will meet there. The place we will
be rock hounding is a couple miles up from there. We will also have a generator
and saw up there to cut the kids birdseye geodes. This will be a great experience for the children. There
is plenty to find. No one will go home empty handed. For the more seasoned rock
hounds, this is an opportunity to share some of your rock hounding skills with
the younger generation!! There is a stream nearby for anyone that wants to
fish, and I have seen many ATV's traveling up and down the canyon. Everyone is
invited, even if you just want to just sit and visit. Robin
We need people to volunteer to lead field
trips. All you need to do is pick a place you want to go, pick a day to go, and
then just lead the people to your rock hunting spot. So many people want to go
rock hunting but no one will volunteer to take them out into the field. Come
join us on a field trip, see how easy it is to organize, and let us know where
you can take us next time.
Check back each month for updated dates and field trips
